Principal’s Lodgings

St Hilda’s College - Oxford

Project and Design lead - Design Engine Architects - 2022

This riverside house enjoys spectacular river views to the west and sits in a gap, between the mature trees on the river bank.

The Principal’s lodgings is conceived as an estate lodge, with it’s fireplace on the cold side of the house, living spaces extending to the west and bedrooms partly within the roof volume.

The chimney forms a vertical element on the riverside elevation. The eaves and shoulder of the house are intentionally kept low, to reduce its scale with dormer windows facing out from the bedrooms to long distant river views.

Full planning permission was achieved in 2022
