About
David Gausden Architects was established in 2021 and is based in Winchester, Hampshire. With a diverse range of architectural interests, our focus is firmly rooted in the crafting of tailored and bespoke buildings and interiors for our clients. We enjoy talking, making and collaborating with people who share our passion for architecture and design.
Experience
David is an architect with over 30 years of experience, working across several sectors and genres.
He studied architecture at Canterbury College of Art, The Kent Institute of Art and Design and The Fachhochschule, Düsseldorf.
Prior to moving to Hampshire in 2003, he worked in London and Hong Kong for Terry Farrell & Partners, MaCormac Jamieson Prichard, Apicella Associates and Pentagram Design in London. He was a director of Design Engine Architects based in Winchester and for over 20 years he worked on a range of projects in the UK, The Channel Islands, and more recently the Middle East. Here he developed a specialism in education, with major projects for schools, universities and further education campuses.
Throughout his career, David has maintained his interest in private houses, interiors, mobile and pavilion buildings. This has continued into his current practice.
His work has been recognised with over 20 architectural awards, including those received from the RIBA, Civic Trust, Civic Voice, and more locally the City of Winchester Trust.
He is on two design panels, Design South East and The Jersey Commission. He regularly supports the RIBA and Civic Trust with Awards judging.
David has taught in schools of architecture and universities throughout his career as a visiting architectural tutor and critic, most recently at the University of Southampton.
David is a registered architect and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Ways of working
We are good listeners and enjoy the process of understanding a client’s needs and ambitions, through creative dialogue.
Our work is greatly influenced by site and place, respectful and referential to context. We see our role as the crafting, choreographing and assembling of ideas into robust and exciting design proposals. We recognise that architecture is a collaborative pursuit and we see ourselves as team players who enjoy working with others, within and outside of the studio.
We are skilled communicators, who like to work intuitively with hand drawings and physical model making, as well as 2D and 3D computer based programmes.
Our work is built around strong design narratives, that maintain a direction of travel and focus to win hearts and minds.
We take our responsibilities as designers very seriously, with sustainability informing critical decision making throughout the design process. With every project, we seek to innovate, exceeding statutory requirements to reduce embodied carbon and carbon in use.
We enjoy collaborating with others to design and realise projects. Current and past collaborations listed below.
